HFES Webinar: Answering the "So What” Question
February 23, 2022 – 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Eastern Time
Camille Peres and Julie Gilpin-McMinn invite you to join them in HFES’ new webinar series: Answering The “So What” Question!
Are you a practitioner who has sat through scientific presentations and afterward thought, “Well, that was interesting, but so what?! How can I apply it to my work?” OR, are you an academic who sees situations in the workplace where findings from your research are not being implemented effectively (or at all)? Well, this webinar series is for YOU!
We will discuss in these webinars how the science of HF/E can and should be translated to practice AND what practice can tell science about research that needs to be done. Through discussions of papers from HFES journals between the authors of the papers and the practitioners who could use that science, this webinar will explore the good, bad, and ugly about how we translate our science into practice. Ultimately, this effort will facilitate practitioners’ engagement with the current science and equally (or more) important, scientists' engagement with practitioners’ needs.
The series will kick off by discussing a paper that is consistently one of the top cited papers in Human Factors: Salas, Grossman, Hughes, & Coultas's Measuring Team Cohesion: Observations from the Science. Rebecca Grossman, Associate Professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Hofstra University, will share information regarding the paper and Christy Harper, Co-Owner and Managing Partner of End-to-End Research, will discuss challenges of managing teams and needs for measuring team cohesion.
The webinar will be more conversational and input and questions from attendees will be encouraged throughout. So whether you’re a scientist, practitioner, or some of both, a come with your questions and comments! Let’s learn from these two great minds and from each other!!!
Rebecca Grossman is an Associate Professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology at Hofstra University. Her research focuses on teams (e.g., team processes and emergent states, measurement of team constructs), training (e.g., training transfer), and complex settings (e.g., multi-cultural teams, virtual teams, multiple team memberships). She was the recipient of both the SIOP Leslie W. Joyce & Paul W. Thayer Fellowship in I-O Psychology and the Fred Lewis I/ITSEC Scholarship for excellence in research on teams and training.
Christy Harper is the owner and managing partner of End to End User Research, a consultancy which conducts UX research, provides facility rentals, human factors and participant recruiting services. Previously Christy spent 17 years with HP, where she led a team doing research on products throughout the lifecycle. She has a Masters Degree in Psychology from the University of Houston-Clear Lake where she is a Distinguished Alumni and Chairperson of the Industry Advisory Board for the Applied Human Factors program. She is the chairperson for HFE WOMAN, HFES chapter Co-chair and Houston HFES past President and Program Director.
