Our Society has internal stakeholders with varying needs at different levels including students, practitioners, consultants, and academicians in a range of industry, government, and for-profit and non-profit settings. Members are human factors knowledge creators, disseminators, seekers, and users. Some look to network and share ideas and opportunities with those with related interests. The Society has a range of external stakeholders such as policy creators and lobbyists, government and other non-profit agencies, companies including vendors and those seeking new employees, and local and broader communities. For these reasons, the Society continues to work to be impactful while also addressing multi-faceted needs.
I seek your support as President-Elect because I want to help the Society to continue in a sustainable way. I want to ensure that we have a stronger alignment between our society’s goals and values, spending, investment of our volunteer time, and impact. Considering the factors that our members and external stakeholders value would help our society to address our goals and to improve the quality of our offerings for our membership.
My HFES leadership, mentorship, and scholarly track record demonstrates my passion and my ability to continue to deliver for our membership. At the society leadership level, I have served as Secretary/Treasurer and on the Executive Council where I initiated programs to address unmet needs such as the Mid-Career Task Force. I served on the Fellow Selection Committee in order to recognize those with outstanding contributions to our field and to society. I served on the Ethics Task Force where we reviewed the society’s code of ethics, statement of appropriate conduct and other policies. With respect to mentorship, I have helped students to launch chapters and have served as the faculty advisor. In addition to reviewing, I have served for our conferences as technical group (TG) program chair and on editorial boards for the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making (CEDM) and for the Human Factors journal. I have co-edited two special issues of JCEDM and have served as Chair, Program Chair, Secretary/Treasurer, and Newsletter Editor for the CEDM TG.
As an academic leader, I understand the critical roles of management and stewardship as well as the value of and the work required to implement shared governance and to foster effective collaborative decision making. As a former engineer in industry and as a consultant, I understand the need for practical and actionable information and efficient methods that facilitate achieving work and research goals and client satisfaction.
Thank you for your consideration.
