Collaboration stands as a cornerstone of our mission to advance the science and practice of designing systems for people. HFES provides numerous avenues for connecting with fellow professionals online and in person. Engage with like-minded peers, cultivate relationships and explore shared interests through our diverse array of opportunities:
- Connect through our specialized technical groups and student and local chapters
- Participate in affinity groups that foster community around shared identities
- Engage in discussions on our online forums
- Attend HFES educational activities designed to broaden knowledge and skills
- Join us for informal networking sessions like our periodic town halls and "coffee talk" gatherings
Technical Groups
HFES Technical Groups focus on specific areas and applications of human factors and ergonomics.

Student & Local Chapters
The Society's local chapters are formed by HFES members in any geographical location. Similarly, student chapters are formed by groups of students and faculty at university and college campuses. Local and student chapters provide forums for members to exchange information and ideas concerning human factors / ergonomics issues in local meetings.

Affinity Groups
Affinity groups provide mutual support and a sense of community to further the non-political, affinity-related interests of those engaged in human factors / ergonomics. These groups could be related to gender, ethnicity, national origin, veteran’s status or other characteristics under the purview of the Diversity Committee. Affinity groups are an extension of HFES’s diversity and inclusion efforts, focusing on both inclusivity within the profession and on advancing science that addresses longstanding societal problems. Affinity groups offer community, mentoring and support based on areas of collective identification. Affinity groups can concentrate on challenging our profession to address these dimensions of personal identification more thoughtfully. These communities can play an integral role throughout the course of a member’s career. There is no cost to become a member of an HFES affinity group for members or non-members of HFES.

Practitioner Group
The Practitioner Professional Group supports the development of members who are interested in practical applications of human factors / ergonomics through all career stages. The Group facilitates networking and mentorship. Its purpose is different from that of Technical Groups and Affinity Groups. The Practitioner Professional Group organizes functions at the annual meeting and engages in other activities to highlight the applications of human factors / ergonomics science.
