Members of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society include students, psychologists, engineers, designers, scientists, consultants, usability professionals and others—all of whom have a common interest in designing systems and equipment to be safe and effective for the people who operate and maintain them. Members are employed in industries, universities and colleges, government agencies, consulting firms, military research centers, public utilities and other settings.

Membership Categories

The membership year follows the calendar year and members may renew beginning October 1 annually. There is a one-time $20 USD membership application fee for Full, Associate and Affiliate membership. Select your membership type below to create a record and join HFES.

Membership Categories, Fees and Eligibility Criteria

Membership Type Annual Dues (USD) Eligibility Criteria
Full $260 Bachelor's degree and five years' experience in HF/E, four of which may have been spent in graduate study
Associate $260 Two years' full-time relevant experience in HF/E
Affiliate $260 Interest in HF/E but does not meet criteria for Full or Associate membership
Student Affiliate * $35 Full-time undergraduate or graduate student  Faculty endorsement is required
Early-Career Associate $125 Former Student Affiliate member within two years of graduation
Corresponding $50 Resides outside of the United States and holds membership with an IEA federated society
Emeritus ** $70
(one-time dues amount)
Full member for at least ten years, retired (age 60+ or due to disability), does not derive significant income from the practice of human factors

* One cannot select Student Affiliate Membership unless their record indicates "Current Student" in the Highest Degree Obtained field.

** Please contact Membership@hfes.org to convert to Emeritus Member.

Dues Reductions and Waivers

Emerging Country Membership Discount

HFES recognizes the considerable benefit that academicians, practitioners, and others from emerging nations can gain from our Society. Discounted dues for those from emerging countries are $75 for Full, Associate, and Affiliate Membership and $15 for Students. Please review the list of designated countries to learn if you are eligible for a discounted rate.

Members of IEA Federated Societies

Those outside of the United States and Territories and who are current members of other Societies that are federated members of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) are permitted a 15% membership discount.  This discount may not be combined with any other discount code.  This benefit is for Full, Affiliate, Associate, and Student Members only. Please contact the membership staff at HFES to request the IEA discount code.
