Human Factors and Ergonomics Textbooks

The HFES Education and Training Committee developed specific selection criteria when deciding what textbooks should appear in the Educational Resource Project.

Below are textbooks that are commonly used in colleges and universities that offer degrees in human factors and ergonomics. Textbooks are listed from basic or introductory human factors and ergonomics courses. The list was compiled from a survey of 76 HF/E programs (19 programs responded about a total of 38 courses). Only books mentioned more than once are included.

Frequency

Textbook

9

Wickens, C. D., Lee, J. Liu, Y. D., & Gordon-Bekcer, S. (2004). An introduction to human factors engineering (2nd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall.

7

Sanders, M. S. & McCormick, E. J. (1993). Human factors in engineering and design (7th ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill.

4

Casey, S. M. (1998). Set phasers on stun. Santa Barbara, CA: Aegean.

2

Chaffin, D. B., Andersson, G. B. J., & Martin, B. J. (2006). Occupational biomechanics (4th ed.). New York: Wiley-Intersciences.

2

Stanton, N., Hedge, A., Brookhuis, K., & Salas, E. (Eds.). (2004). Handbook of human factors and ergonomics methods. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press.

2

Wilson, J. R. & Corlett, E. N. (Eds.) (2005). Evaluation of human work: A practical ergonomics methodology (3rd ed.). Philadelphia: Taylor & Francis.

2

Norman, D. A. (2002). The design of everyday things. New York: Basic Books.

It was also common for course instructors to include multiple textbooks. Typical pairings included the Wickens et. al. or Sanders & McCormick book with Casey's Set Phasers on Stun, or Norman's Design of Everyday Things.
