HFES TG of the Month: Aerospace Systems Technical Group (ASTG)
Posted August 07, 2025

The Aerospace Systems Technical Group (ASTG) brings together human factors specialists dedicated to improving the
safety, performance, and efficiency of human-machine systems in aviation and space. Our work spans the entire system lifecycle—from design and certification to operations and maintenance—across both civilian and military domains.
With important shifts occurring in aerospace over the past decade—including the rise of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, the expanding role of drones in both civil and defense sectors, and the growing momentum of commercial spaceflight—the role of human factors has never been more essential. ASTG is at the forefront of these transformations, helping to shape the science and practice behind the human roles of today and tomorrow, whether on the flight deck, in air traffic control towers, or aboard space vehicles.
What We Do
ASTG supports a dynamic and engaged community of researchers, practitioners, and students through a range of initiatives:
Monthly Newsletter on HFES Connect that includes:
- A summary of the latest peer-reviewed publications in aviation and aerospace human factors.
- A featured article offering a deep dive into a timely research topic.
- A Member Spotlight series that highlights professionals—especially from industry—sharing their career paths and contributions to the field.
- A roundup of key developments in the aerospace sector, with insights into why they matter to our members.
Webinar Series
ASTG organizes regular webinars featuring thought leaders and emerging voices in aerospace human factors. These sessions are livestreamed and recorded for later viewing on our YouTube channel. Recent topics have included:
Student Travel Awards
ASTG offers travel grants to support student first authors presenting their work at the annual ASPIRE conference, promoting new talent and increasing visibility for student research in our field.
Online Presence and Industry Engagement
In the past year, we launched a new ASTG website and a LinkedIn page to increase our visibility and better serve our members.
We invite all HFES members with interests in aviation, aerospace operations, space systems, or defense-related ergonomics to connect with us and become part of the conversation.
