I currently serve as a Professor of Human Factors at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Over the past 13 years I have taught and mentored hundreds of undergraduate, masters, and PhD students in Human Factors, many of whom have gone on to become important members of our society and science. In this role, I also co-direct two laboratories - the REACH & STAR Laboratories. I have published over 200 scientific works, and I have continually secured external funding, which has helped to advance Human Factors in socio-technical systems, healthcare, aviation, and team science.

I have been consistently involved in HFES leadership for the past 20 years in a variety of roles ranging from President of UCFs student chapter, Chair of national Ergonomics Month, Chair of the Education TG, Chair of the HCTG, and for the last 10 years as Co-Chair/Chair of the HFES Healthcare Human Factors Symposium. While serving in these roles, I have demonstrated that I have a proven track record driving multi-year initiatives successfully on behalf of our members. I have also been the recipient of multiple HFES awards throughout my career, including the William C. Howell Young Investigator Award and the Bentzi Karsh Early Career Service Award, recognizing both scholarly excellence and my commitment to HFES service. I also serve as a member of the HFES crisis committee and planning committee. I was previously President of Division 21 of the American Psychological Association, and I have helped to build a stronger bridge between these two societies.  In summary, I have years of experience as a volunteer and leader within HFES that I can apply to my role on the Executive Council.

My Objectives- I will focus on bringing tangible benefits to our members by learning what their unmet needs are from HFES.  Further, I have the goal of keeping the society moving in a positive direction as we continue to navigate the current and future changes to scientific policy and governance. Specifically, I aim to focus on improving our impact as a field, making the society more valuable to our current membership, and finding paths to continue recruiting new members since our membership numbers have been on a decline. I value collaborative strategizing over siloed execution or individual-level decision making. It would be my hope that any member of our society could understand the inner workings of our governance and participate in it!

My Impact -
  • Focus on bringing more value to current members.
  • Make the society and science more accessible to gain new members.
  • Facilitate the bridge between our science and the application across various domains. We must encourage application and celebrate it.
  • Building stronger teams and groups within the organization.
  • Bring forward-thinking vision on how HFES can support members in a rapidly changing landscape of research funding, AI integration, and cross-sector collaboration.
