HFES Educational Resources Review Criteria

The HFES Education and Training Committee developed specific selection criteria when deciding what information should appear in the Educational Resources Project. Below are the criteria by category.

Review Criteria for Definitions:

  1. Does the definition reflect the breadth of human factors and ergonomics?
  2. Does the definition comprise both research (theory) and design (application)?
  3. Does the definition reflect the scientific nature of the field?
  4. Is the definition clear and concise?

Review Criteria for Syllabi:

  1. Is the syllabus current (e.g., texts in print, links functional)?
  2. Does the syllabus content cover general human factors/ergonomics content?
    1. Is the syllabus comprehensive?
  3. Does the syllabus have course objectives?
  4. Is the syllabus ethical (e.g., no inappropriate links, no inappropriate language)?
  5. Is the syllabus for a(n)
    1. undergraduate introduction to or overview of HF/E course?
    2. graduate introduction to or overview of HF/E course?
  6. Is the syllabus detailed enough to understand the articles used, activities performed, etc.?

Review Criteria for Online Courses in HF/E:

  1. Is the course related to the study and/or practice of human factors/ergonomics?
  2. Is the topic of the course current?
  3. Is the course readily accessible? (For example, avoid posting links to courses that are no longer available.)
  4. Only Web site links to these continuing education opportunities are provided.  It is the user's responsibility to determine if access is free or requires payment of a fee.
  5. HFES does not guarantee the quality of these educational experiences. It is the user's responsibility to determine the accuracy of the tool and its results.

Review Criteria for Continuing Education Opportunities:

  1. Is the continuing education opportunity related to the study and/or practice of HF/E?
  2. Is the topic of the continuing education opportunity current?
  3. Is the continuing education opportunity readily accessible (e.g., opportunities on posted links are currently available)?
  4. Only Web site links to these continuing education opportunities are provided.  It is the user's responsibility to determine if access is free or requires payment of a fee.
  5. HFES does not guarantee the quality of these educational experiences.

Review Criteria for Online Materials on Specific Training Topics:

  1. Does the material deal with a specific field within HF/E?
  2. Is the information up-to-date for the topics covered?
  3. Is the source credible, and/or does the information appear to be accurate?
  4. Are the authors of the material affiliated with an accredited university or academic institution?
  5. Do the authors have industry experience in the area they are writing about?
  6. Do the authors have a related educational background?
  7. Does the material provide actionable items and/or other suggested reading/training?
  8. Only Web site links to these continuing education opportunities are provided. It is the user's responsibility to determine if access is free or requires payment of a fee.
  9. HFES does not guarantee accuracy. It is the user's responsibility to determine the accuracy of the tool and its results.

Review Criteria for Textbooks for Introductory HF/E Courses:

  1. The textbook should be in use in a majority of HFES-accredited graduate programs for a topic area.
  2. The textbook should be recommended by those who use it.
  3. The textbook should have an edition that has been published in the last 10 years (or be listed as a historical reference).

Review Criteria for Textbooks on Specific Training Topics:

  1. Is the book is relatively up to date, or is it a classic in the field?
  2. Does it cover a topic of interest to HFES members as defined in the educational needs survey?
  3. Is it accessible?

Review Criteria for Books, Journals and Other Publications:

  1. Is the publication related to the study and/or practice of human factors/ergonomics?
  2. Is the publication readily accessible (e.g., does not include out-of-print volumes or unpublished manuscripts)?
  3. Is the full citation available for the publication (e.g., journal articles: full name, volume, issue, page numbers; books: title, author/editors, publisher, and year)?
  4. With regard to electronic versions (e.g., PDF, MS Word) of publications (e.g., journal article, book chapter, etc.), Educational Resources posts only Web site links to these publications. Users are responsible for determining if access is free or requires a subscription/download fee.
  5. All copyrighted materials must be used with permission and must acknowledge the source.

Review Criteria for Online Research Resources:

  1. Is the resource related to the study and/or practice of human factors/ergonomics?
  2. Is the tool current?
  3. Is the tool readily accessible (e.g., are posted links to courses currently available)?
  4. Is the tool copyrighted/patented?
  5. HFES does not guarantee accuracy. It is the user's responsibility to determine the accuracy of the tool and its results.
  6. It is the user's responsibility to determine if access is free or requires payment of a fee.

Review Criteria for Standards Web Sites:

  1. Are they the most current?
  2. Can they be identified as industry or education standards?
  3. Can they address specific HF/E topics identified in the HFES member educational needs survey?
  4. Are they accessible (either free or for a fee)?

Review Criteria for Internships:

  1. Does the resource provide information about the types of careers in HF/E?
  2. Does the resource provide information about how to find jobs in HF/E?
  3. Does the resource discuss the qualifications necessary for a career in HF/E?
  4. Does the resource use language that is understandable and relevant to those with little knowledge of HF/E?
  5. Is the information up to date to reflect changes in industry?
  6. Does the resource define academic vs. industry vs. government/military paths clearly?

Review Criteria for Publishing Resources (Copyright/Plagiarism):

  1. Is the publishing resource current(e.g., reflecting latest copyright laws, accounting for online material)?
  2. Are examplesprovided?
  3. Is the publishing resource thoroughand detailed?
  4. Is the publishing resource from a crediblesource?
  5. Is the publishing resource relevantto one of the three HFES target user roles (student, teacher, professional)? Is it written in a format that can be understood by each audience? And are we adequately meeting the needs of each role?
  6. Is it a comprehensiveresource, thus reducing the number of resource links that need to be aggregated by HFES and digested by members?
  7. Is the publishing resource usableand accessible?
