Earlier this week, we shared a message that the Executive Committee was monitoring the escalating global impact of COVID-19 and that the 2020 International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care would be proceeding as planned. After much review, dialogue with key stakeholders and considerable evaluation of the evolving situation, the Executive Council has decided to cancel the Health Care Human Factors Symposium in the best interest of all involved.
This decision was not made lightly and was determined based on the concerns voiced by our attendees, the cancellation of other events within the United States, Canada, and globally, as well as the increasing volume of confirmed cases of COVID-19.
The symposium continually provides valuable opportunity for attendees to learn and discuss emerging issues and challenges in health care human factors. The symposium is an event focused on patient safety. The Society and our members are committed to improving people's lives, reducing risk, and preventing injuries. With this in mind, the health and safety of our constituents is of utmost importance and our top priority. The ongoing spread of COVID-19 has resulted in mounting concern over health safety, along with increased travel advisories and government health warnings. It has become clear that the most responsible path forward is to cancel the 2020 Health Care Human Factors Symposium.
We appreciate that this international public health situation is one that is out of everyone’s control. We apologize for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause to you and your business needs. Please note that the Society is looking into ways we can provide the valuable content from the symposium virtually to our attendees and members in the coming months.
HFES will be sharing more information shortly regarding registration fees paid and next steps. We encourage anyone who has booked hotel room reservations for the Symposium to contact the hotel immediately to inform them of your changed travel plans.
