Games To Explain Human Factors: Come, Participate, Have Fun! (or HF Games)

This is a popular, informative, entertaining, nontraditional introduction to Human Factors (HF) for students, teachers, and practitioners. It has been used in HFES Annual Meeting to demonstrate the basic concepts of human factors and ergonomics for 10 years.

HFES Local Chapter, Student Chapter, and individual members are invited to utilize this presentation to explain HF to school, community, and professional groups in their community as part of the HFES sponsored National Ergonomics Month (NEM).

A networking activity has been added to this session, consistent with the NEM objectives of Teaching, Learning, Service, Networking, and Fun. The session promises to be informative and FUN! Participants might even win a prize!

The packet includes a sample certificate of appreciation to present to student participants.

Is There a Place For Me in Human Factors?

This presentation presents middle and high school students with a sampling of the many potential job opportunities in the area. It also provides graphics to stimulate "real-world" problem discussions during school visits. The presentation includes (1) an introduction to the field of human factors and the premise for its evolution (2) several illustrative graphics from which to address career opportunities available in the field. The presentation is intentionally non-text-laden so that presenters can provide their own interpretations of the field and various careers (brief notes are provided for particular slides, however). Demonstration of the classic "The Magical Number Seven Plus or Minus Two" is provided.

School Visitation Packet

This is a new packet available to HF professionals as a way to introduce human factors and ergonomics to school-age children. The packet will provide you with guidelines and materials which may help you to promote the field to students by planning a school visit for National Ergonomics Month.

  • HFES Members and teachers may request this presentation for personal use and use in the classroom in conjunction with National Ergonomics Month (NEM).
  • Members and teachers will not rename, make multiple copies of, sell, modify or redistribute the presentation.

  • When finished with the presentation Members and teachers agree to destroy all copies in their possession.

  • Members and teachers will use the presentation materials at their own risk (For example, neither the designer nor HFES can be 100% sure how it will operate on a given computer or whether this particular presentation is appropriate for a particular audience).
