New Statement of Appropriate Conduct at HFES Conferences Released

HFES has drafted and released a Statement of Appropriate Conduct at Conferences of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society aimed at ensuring that the meeting continues to provide a professional, productive, and safe environment free of discrimination, hostility, or harassment. As a professional society, HFES is strongly committed to diversity, equity, the professional expression of ideas, and ethical treatment of all members and meeting participants. These values and a zero-tolerance stance on harassment are in line with the Society's Code of Ethics. The conduct statement emphasizes and enforces HFES values, defining harassment and explicitly condemning it. The statement outlines prohibited conduct, provides guidance on how to report incidents, describes the investigative procedure, and explains the disciplinary actions associated with prohibited conduct.

The statement was developed within the Internal Affairs Division after reports of incidents at the 2016 Annual Meeting. It was reviewed by the Executive Council and the Society's legal advisory team. The Executive Council voted in March for its immediate implementation.

The statement, which is in line with statements provided by similar professional societies, is posted on the Society's Web site and will be posted on sites of any HFES-sponsored conferences or meetings.

HFES seeks to provide a conference atmosphere in which diverse participants may learn, network, and enjoy the company of colleagues in an environment of dignity and mutual respect.

On Friday, May 19, 2017, at noon Eastern/9:00 a.m. Pacific, join Joseph B. Lyons as he presents "Trust in Automation: Lessons Learned From Auto-GCAS." Register for the webinar by clicking on the banner above.

Research on trust in automation has proliferated as automated systems have been developed and fielded in the military and society. Yet, few studies have examined trust in automation of real systems, with real operators, using technology with real-world consequences. In this webinar, Lyons will discuss the research directions of the Human Insight and Trust (HIT) team within the Air Force Research Laboratory. He will describe high-level directions for this team and do a "deep dive" into one applied project in which trust was studied in the context of F-16 pilots and a novel automated safety system.

The Southeastern Human Factors Applied Research Conference – A Success

On April 1, the HFES Student Chapter at North Carolina State University (NC State) hosted the first annual Southeastern Human Factors Applied Research Conference (SHARC) in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the James B. Hunt Library. Ninety attendees from diverse backgrounds gathered to present research, network, and learn more from industry professionals.

The conference had two primary goals: increase networking among universities in the southeast region and highlight the diversity and quality of human factors work by the graduate students in the region. SHARC brought together graduate and undergraduate students from NC State, Embry-Riddle, Clemson, Old Dominion, George Mason, Auburn, the University of Virginia, Georgia Tech, and the University of Central Florida. Speakers came from NASA, John Deere, Microsoft, Google, and the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division. Each speaker gave a 30-minute presentation about the work being done and gave advice about future employment.

Nancy Currie-Gregg, an astronaut and principal engineer at NASA, delivered the keynote address, in which she discussed the physical ergonomics of spaceflight for astronauts. Currie-Gregg addressed many of the physical changes that occur in astronauts when they return from space and suggested future research directions to address the physical limitations of space travel.

Throughout the day, students were able to network with industry professionals as well as representatives from BB&T, Microsoft, Division 21 of the APA, and John Deere at the conference's career center, learning more about internship and employment opportunities. Likewise, students were seen networking and mingling with students from other universities during coffee breaks and the poster sessions.

To meet the second goal of highlighting the diversity and quality of human factors work, the conference featured 52 poster presentations that covered topics including automation, wearable devices, Web environments, safety, spatial abilities, driving performance, cybersecurity, and many more. The poster sessions were well attended, prompting networking with industry professionals and conversations about the presenters' research.

With the generous support from participating companies, outstanding speakers, and the large turnout, the conference achieved its goals. Many attendees informed the organizers that they enjoyed the conference and stated how beneficial it was to their future career pursuits.

During lunch, HFES student chapter presidents from many of the participating universities discussed future collaboration opportunities between the schools. In order to maintain the collaborative momentum for students in the region, the conference ended with the message "See you at SHARC 2018!"

Nominations Sought for IEA Triennial Awards

Every three years, at its Triennial Congress, the International Ergonomics Association honors achievement in eight categories. The next Triennial Congress, IEA's 20th, will be held in Florence, Italy, on August 26–30, 2018. Details about the awards can be downloaded here.

As a Federated Society of IEA, HFES may nominate candidates for the awards in four categories, as follows:

The IEA Distinguished Service Award, which is presented to individuals for outstanding contributions to the promotion, development, and advancement of IEA.

The IEA Outstanding Educator Award, presented for outstanding contributions in ergonomics education for having developed ergonomics education programs, produced new methodology and/or materials for teaching ergonomics, and graduated persons who have become outstanding ergonomists.

The IEA Award for Promotion of Ergonomics in Industrially Developing Countries is given for outstanding and significant contributions to the development of the infrastructure of ergonomics in an industrially developing country. This may be manifested through the development of teaching or training programs, implementation of ergonomics design in industry, development of R&D programs, organization of ergonomics professionals, and extensive collaboration with international bodies such as the United Nations.

The IEA Ergonomics Development Award is presented to persons who have had an international impact on ergonomics in terms of making a contribution or development that significantly advances the state of the art of an existing HF/E subspecialty and opens up a new area of HF/E research and/or application.

HFES's IEA Representatives Committee is seeking nominations, including self-nominations, for these awards. Submissions will be judged through the HFES Awards Committee, which will forward recommended candidates to the HFES Executive Council for approval.

Please submit a letter of nomination that describes why a candidate is qualified for the award, 2–3 letters of endorsement, and the candidate's résumé or curriculum vitae, all in a single PDF file, to Waldemar Karwowski at by November 1, 2017.

Submit Your Papers for the 2017 Human Factors Prize on Cybersecurity by June 2

This year's $10,000 Human Factors Prize focuses on human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) research on cybersecurity. The submission window is open through June 2, 2017.

Submissions can report on HF/E research related to techniques, tools, or training to analyze and develop security measures to ensure safety in any domain and application area. Examples include, but are not limited to, aviation, transportation, oil and gas, power grid, nuclear, military operations, health care, politics, and terrorism.

All researchers are eligible to submit relevant work; membership in HFES is not required. Complete details about eligibility and submission requirements may be found here.

Students: Don't Miss Out on an Award and Cash Prize!

The deadline to apply for the Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award has been extended to June 30, 2017. This annual award is given to a student or group of students for an ergonomics project that demonstrates the major practice areas of ergonomics: analysis, design, validation, and implementation. The award is open to masters and PhD students worldwide who are enrolled in ergonomics and ergonomics-related programs. Students who have completed their graduate degrees in the past year are also eligible.

The award, which includes a $1,000 prize, will be presented during the 2017 HFES Annual Meeting, October 9–13, 2017, in Austin, Texas.
