HFES Highlights Importance of NSF Funding at Capitol Hill Exhibition

On April 26, HFES member Alex Kirlik, a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois, represented the Society at the annual Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) Exhibition and Reception in Washington, D.C. The HFES booth presented an interactive flight simulator that demonstrated the science behind human interaction with electronic systems.
 

The exhibition was an opportunity for HFES and CNSF members to display and discuss National Science Foundation-funded research directly with congressional policy makers and federal agency officials. These discussions were intended to highlight the importance of continued federal investment in NSF and basic scientific research. Participation in the annual event further elevated the Society's profile within the science community and increased visibility of HF/E research among important decision makers.


CNSF, an alliance of more than 140 organizations, advocates to increase investments in NSF research and education programs. During the reception, Kirlik spoke with influential members of the scientific community, including Amber Story, deputy director of NSF's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences; Eric Hammond, NSF Congressional Affairs; and former Congressman Rush Holt, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Participation in this event is a valuable opportunity to increase awareness of HFES and the importance of human factors research in all facets of society and federal public policy.
