2005 HFES Awardees

During the plenary session of the 49th Annual Meeting on September 27, 2005, the following individuals were recognized for distinguished contributions to the human factors/ergonomics field.

Jerome H. Ely Human Factors Article Award
Marcus Watson and Penelope Sanderson (seen here with award subcommittee chair William C. Howell), Swinburne University of Technology (Australia) were honored for their paper, "Sonification Supports Eyes-Free Respiratory Monitoring and Task Time-Sharing," Volume 46, Number 3, Fall 2004.
Distinguished International Colleague Award
Y. Ian Noy (seen here with award subcommittee chair Waldemar Karwowski) was acknowledged as an exceptionally productive and influential researcher on issues related to transportation, particularly highway transportation. He has also been exceptionally active and influential in leadership roles both in Canada and internationally, most notably as president of the International Ergonomics Association.
Paul M. Fitts Education Award
Joel S. Warm (seen here with award subcommittee chair Arthur D. Fisk) was honored for his numerous distinguished scientific and academic accomplishments and for his unfailing dedication to his students and to the many professionals in the human factors/ergonomic field whom he has mentored over his 40-year career.
A. R. Lauer Safety Award
Colin G. Drury (seen here with award subcommittee chair John Brian Peacock) was acknowledged for a career that not only covers traditional areas of safety but also extends its practical application to such areas as consumer products, medical systems, aircraft maintenance, nuclear materials, and transportation.
Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Design Award
Bryce Rutter (seen here with award subcommittee chair Robert J. Beaton) and his company, Metaphase Design Group, produced Bayer Healthcare Diagnostic Division's Ascensia BREEZE blood-glucose monitoring system for which he was honored with this award.
Alphonse Chapanis Student Paper Award
Emily Muthard (seen here with award subcommittee chair Kermit Davis) was awarded the 2005 Chapanis award for her paper, "The Contaminating Influence of Display Size on Flight Control, Risk Assessment, and Route Selection."
Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award
Peter A. Hancock (seen here with F. Thomas Eggemeier) was honored for innovation and achievement in many areas, including the design and evaluation of human-machine systems, situational awareness, human stress, decision making, system automation, and workload assessment, and for the integration of the multidisciplinary approaches within the HF/E field.
Best Ergonomics in Design Article Award
The Best Ergonomics in Design Article Award for 2004 was awarded to J. T. Bryant, J. M. Stevenson, L. L. Bossi (seen here with F. Thomas Eggemeier), S. A. Reid, R. P. Pelot, and E. L. Morin for "Optimizing Load Carriage Systems" in the Winter issue of EID.
Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award
Ronald G. Shapiro (seen here with Richard J. Hornick) was honored for his untiring service and excellence in outreach on behalf of the Society and the profession, particularly for his efforts in organizing National Ergonomics Month.
Arnold M. Small President's Distinguished Service Award
William C. Howell was recognized for career-long contributions that have brought honor to the discipline and the Society.
