Online Human Factors FAQ for Individual Subscribers

Thanks for your interest in subscribing to Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (online ISSN 1547-8181). Human Factors is hosted online by IngentaConnect. Below are some frequently asked questions regarding individual nonmember subscriptions. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to contact the HFES Communications Department.

1. How can I view sample content before I decide to subscribe?
There are two ways to view sample content. First, a number of sample articles may be found on the Human Factors information page. These articles won the HFES Jerome H. Ely Award for the best paper published in the previous years' volumes. Second, you may soon sign up for a free trial to access one issue for 30 days at IngentaConnect.

2. How will I access the online journal?
There are two ways to access the journal content: via the HFES Web site and via IngentaConnect. However, if you are logging in for the first time, you will need to complete a simple registration, which takes just a few minutes. Go to the IngentaConnect main page and click the "Need to register? Sign up here" link on the right side of the page. When HFES receives notice of your completed registration, your access will be turned on. This generally takes about 24 hours during the business week.

3. What content do I get with my subscription?
In 2007, you will have access to the current volume plus past volumes to 1993. In addition, after the last issue of the 2007 volume is published, you will receive a CD-ROM containing all the 2007 papers in PDF format. (Printed back issues may be purchased individually.) As long as you remain a subscriber, you will have access to all online issues.

4. How will I know when an issue is available?
HFES will send you an e-mail message when new issues are posted on IngentaConnect. Please be sure to send HFES updates if you should change e-mail address. In addition, when you subscribe, you can select the "Receive New Issue Alert" feature in IngentaConnect.

5. How long does my subscription last?
Human Factors is published six times per calendar year, with the first issue in February. The December issue may be viewed until January 31 of the following year.

6. What happens if I want to change from online to print delivery?
You may change your preference from online to print issues anytime, but the change will not take effect until the beginning of the next volume year (February issue). However, you may add print to your online-only subscription anytime by sending payment for the difference in cost between a print-only and the print+online subscription rate. You will then receive any previously published printed issues for the year you subscribe.

7. If I cease my subscription, can I still get access to Human Factors?
If you cease your subscription, you will no longer have access to current or back issues of the online journal. However, you can subscribe as a nonmember at the prevailing rate, purchase individual articles of interest, or purchase printed back issues.

8. I am a member of an ergonomics association outside the United States. Am I entitled to a discount?
Yes, any individual member of an ergonomics association affiliated with the International Ergonomics Association may subscribe to Human Factors at a 15% discount from the nonmember rates. Please contact HFES directly to subscribe.

9. Does HFES plan to make all previously published articles available online?
Yes, we plan to have all back issues available (since 1958) by the end of 2009 as part of the new HFES Digital Library. Phase I of the Digital Library will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2007.

The Digital Library will include Human Factors since 1993 as well as HFES Annual Meeting proceedings papers from 1993 to 2007 and Ergonomics in Design (1993-2007), the Society's quarterly peer-reviewed applications-oriented technical journal. Individual subscription rates for the Digital Library will be announced later this year.
