Call for Human Factors Editor

HFES appreciates your interest in being considered for the editorship of Human Factors for the term 2009-2012. Please submit (a) a letter expressing your interest in the editorship; (b) insert your answers below the questions in the following sections (your responses greatly assist the Publications Committee during the selection process); (c) a current curriculum vitae; and (d) two personal or professional recommendations from colleagues in support of your candidacy. The extended deadline for submitting your candidacy is June 6, 2008.

About You

1. Please describe your prior experience editorial experience and why you believe you are qualified for the job of Human Factors editor.

2. What attracts you to the role of editor?

3. The editor works with many different people. What skills and experience do you have in leading and managing people, particularly volunteers?

4. Please describe your experience in similar editorial roles and the strategies you used to manage the review process.

About the Process

5. The term of the editor is four years. Upon mutual agreement of the editor and the Executive Council, the editor's tenure may be extended up to two 2-year extensions. In addition, the incoming editor will be asked to work with the outgoing editor, and at the conclusion of the editor's term, he or she remains responsible for submissions that were received during his/her tenure. Therefore, on each end of the tenure there will be some months of overlap to enable a smooth transition. The job requires a minimum of eight hours per week, and this amount of time needs to be put in consistently, each week, to avoid backlogs. Are you willing to make this commitment?

6. The Scientific Communications and Publications Domain Leader and Publications Committee will want to be assured that you have a good understanding of the nature of the job of journal editor. Please detail your understanding of this task. To whom have you talked regarding the commitments required of the journal editor?

7. How familiar are you with the current operation of the journal from the editorial and production side? (For details, contact Lois Smith in the HFES Communications Department, 310/394-1811.) Based on your understanding of current operations, what, if anything, would you do differently? For example, (a) delegation of responsibilities to associate editors; (b) composition of the editorial board; (c) coordination with the central office staff; (d) secretarial/administrative aspects of the job.

8. What in particular do you like and dislike about the current format, editorial practices, etc., of the journal?

9. What constitutes acceptable and unacceptable material, and where do the boundaries need to change from current practice, if at all? Please try to be more specific than "it should be scholarly."

10. How would you phrase a letter to an author who had submitted an unsatisfactory revision that appears to have too many serious flaws to warrant encouraging further revision (i.e., rejection)?

About Your Vision

11. What do you feel the goals and philosophy of the journal should be?

12. How do you perceive the role of Human Factors in relation to other peer-reviewed HFES publications (Ergonomics in Design, Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making, and Reviews of Human Factors and Ergonomics)?

13. How do you perceive the role of Human Factors in relation to other journals in the HF/E field?

14. In what ways to you feel the overall impact of Human Factors could be increased, and how would you attempt to do so if you were selected as editor?

15. What do you believe is the primary responsibility of the editor (e.g., as a gatekeeper, facilitator, etc.)?

16. What new ideas do you have for the journal?

Next Steps

The Publications Committee will evaluate the applications, after which telephone interviews will be scheduled.
