Information Required for Workshop Proposals

Each section below must be completed and included as your summary. Be sure to include every section to ensure proper review of your proposal.

1. Biography for each presenter describing pertinent background and expertise in the area addressed in the workshop proposal.

2. An abstract of up to 250 words describing (a) the skills to be learned, (b) who would benefit by taking the workshop (i.e., audiences within or outside the field; beginners to experts), (c) prerequisite knowledge (subject domain) of participants, and (d) materials or equipment (if any) participants must bring with them. NOTE: Your workshop will be marketed using this abstract. If it does not sufficiently cover the required areas of information (a-d), enrollment may be low.

3. A summary describing (a) the need for the workshop; (b) knowledge, skills, and experience participants will gain; (c) methods used; and (d) requisite education/background participants must have.

4. Workshop duration: 3 hours or 6 hours. If 3 hours, specify either 8:30 a.m.-12:00 noon OR 1:30-5:00 p.m.

5. Participants' required expertise level. This can be a single level or a range (e.g., Beginning to Experienced). Participant expertise levels are defined as follows: Beginner has no prior experience, novice is acquainted with the topic but has minimal experience, experienced has good working knowledge with hands-on experience, expert has extensive knowledge and experience. Expertise level may be expressed as a range (e.g., "Beginner to Novice"). NOTE: Select the expertise area(s) carefully, as attendees will rate the effectiveness of the workshop based partly on your selection.

6. Hour-by-hour schedule of your planned presentations and exercises, including the time(s), topic to be covered, learning mode, and skills taught (e.g., time: 10:00-11:00 a.m.; topic: menu formats; learning mode: class exercises; skill taught: design alternative menus).

7. Description of the target audience (e.g., specialty areas, employment settings) and if specific skills are required to take the workshop.

8. Objectives - emphasis is on hands-on, how-to learning. List the skills learners will be able to apply by the end of the workshop.

9. Brief description of the handouts you will use. HFES will reproduce and distribute copies of the handouts for each session:

10. The HFES Education and Training Committee is interested in sponsoring workshops that address specific HFES member needs as expressed in a 2003 survey. Do you wish to have your workshop proposal evaluated by the HFES Education and Training Committee to determine if it meets those needs? Choose yes or no.

11. List of the audiovisual, video, computer, or other equipment you will need. (NOTE: Costs of audiovisual equipment are factored into the workshop fees. Although we encourage presenters to request equipment adequate to their needs, workshops with very high AV and computer requirements may be vulnerable to cancellation due to low enrollment.) Indicate the number and type of items (e.g., computer and screen, DVD player and TV monitor, microphone, whiteboard and pens, flipchart and pens, phone line and type of Internet access, PC workstation, Mac workstation, speakers, special room setup).
