HFES and Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science (DBIS)

Are you or someone you know aware of new or upcoming breakthroughs in human factors/ergonomics research or practice? If you are, HFES would like to hear from you.

The Society is a partner with the American Institute of Physics' Disvoeries and Breakthroughs Inside Science (DBIS) program, which produces 90-second science news spots that are broadcast to millions of viewers of news programs from local TV network affiliates across the country. More information about DBIS may be viewed at http://www.aip.org/dbis/about.html, and the subscribing TV stations are shown on a map at http://www.aip.org/dbis/stations.html.

The work must meet all of the following criteria in order for HFES to submit it for consideration to DBIS:

  • describes new, unique, cutting-edge, or similarly newsworthy research or practice
  • will have an impact on a large segment of the general public
  • might be implemented within one year
  • lends itself to visual depiction on television

Please send story ideas to Lois Smith and include

  1. a description of the work,
  2. the names and contact information of those doing the work and one or two independent technical evaluators not involved with the work described, and
  3. which aspect(s) of the work are particularly new, unique, cutting-edge, and newsworthy.

HFES will evaluate the ideas submitted and forward candidates to DBIS. If your idea is accepted, HFES will assist with development. We might also select your story idea to feature on the HFES Web site or in articles in the HFES Bulletin.

Thank you!
