2007 HFES Awardees

During the Opening Plenary Session of the 51st Annual Meeting on October 2, 2007, the following individuals were recognized for distinguished contributions to the human factors/ergonomics field.

Jerome H. Ely Human Factors Article Award
Pictured from left to right, Lloyd D. Tripp, Gerald Matthews, and Joel S. Warm were awarded for their article, "+Gz Acceleration Loss of Consciousness: Time Course Performance Deficits With Repeated Experience," which was published in Volume 48, Number 1, Winter 2006.
Distinguished International Colleague Award
Patricia Ann Scott was recognized for her accomplishments as an educator, researcher, and promoter of ergonomics in South Africa and the African continent and throughout the industrially developing world.
Paul M. Fitts Education Award
Deborah A. Boehm-Davis was recognized for her international reputation among both students and peers as an exceptional educator. She served as HFES president in 1993-1994 and is a Fellow of both HFES and the American Psychological Association (APA).
A. R. Lauer Safety Award
Peter A. Hancock's continuing efforts in the field of occupational safety earned him the A. R. Lauer Safety Award.
Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Design Award
Jay G. Pollack earned his award for developing the Crown TP 6000, a high-density warehouse turret stock picker that has been enthusiastically received by warehouse and equipment operators alike.
Alphonse Chapanis Student Paper Award
Shameem Hameed (left), Thomas Ferris (right), and Robert Penfold and Nikhil C. Rao (not pictured) received the award for their paper, "Tactions in Multitask Environments: The Interaction of Presentation Modality and Processing Code."
Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award
Eduardo Salas was honored for his numerous efforts to extend and diversify the application of HF/E principles and methods to new areas, specifically in team performance and training effectiveness. He was also honored for his cutting-edge research contributions in space, aviation, military, medical, and corporate applications.
Best Ergonomics in Design Article Award
Eduardo Salas (pictured above), Katherine Wilson, C. Shawn Burke, and Dennis C. Wightman (not pictured), and William R. Howse (pictured here) were awarded for their article, "A Checklist for Crew Resource Management Training," published in the Spring 2006 issue. The authors distilled the complex and far-ranging existing research on CRM into a set of simple principles that are applicable across various contexts.
Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award
Najmedin Meshkati's research and published works on major industrial accidents and disasters around the world have focused on risk reduction and reliability enhancement of complex and large-scale sociotechnical systems.
Arnold M. Small President's Distinguished Service Award
Donald B. Chaffin (not pictured) was recognized for his career-long contributions that have brought honor to the HF/E discipline and HFES. He recently retired as professor of industrial and operations engineering, biomedical engineering, and environmental health sciences at the University of Michigan.
