2006 HFES Awardees

During the Opening Plenary Session of the 50th Annual Meeting on October 17, 2006, the following individuals were recognized for distinguished contributions to the human factors/ergonomics field.

Jerome H. Ely Human Factors Article Award

Morrison (not shown) were awarded for their article, "Heuristic Automation for Decluttering Tactical Displays," which was published in Volume 47, Number 3, Fall 2005. F. Thomas Eggemeier (far right) presented the award to them.
Distinguished International Colleague Award
Klaus J. Zink was acknowledged as a strong leader and researcher in the methodology of macroergonomics for more than 25 years. He has been a long-time presence in the International Ergonomics Association and has headed the Research Institute for Technology and Work in Germany for more than a decade.
Paul M. Fitts Education Award
Raja Parasuraman was honored for his contributions to the education of human factors/ergonomics specialists, his high-quality research and teaching, and his influential role in student mentorship and motivation.
A. R. Lauer Safety Award
Michael Sivak, perhaps best known for his inception of the rear-window brake light in vehicles, was acknowledged for his numerous contributions to studies in driver safety. He has raised many issues specifically associated with driver vision.
Alphonse Chapanis Student Paper Award
Laura K. Thompson was awarded for her paper, "Using Glance Behavior to Evaluate ACC Driver Controls in a Driving Simulator."
Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award
Peter M. Budnick was honored for establishing, Ergoweb, a Web site that enables human factors/ergonomics professionals, engineers, designers, and students to regularly communicate and discuss ideas in a public forum. The site is also an exceptional resource for those not in the HF/E community seeking information on relevant topics.
Best Ergonomics in Design Article Award
Steven Estes, Oscar Almos, Cheryl Andrews, Anthony D. Andre (shown), Susan T. Chrysler, and Daniel J. Hannon were awarded for their article, "Better Taxiway Surface Markings, Safer Airports," which was published in the Spring 2005 issue. Their work contributed to a new safety standard that will be required at major airports across the country by June 2008.
Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award
Nancy J. Cooke was honored for her successful efforts to educate and spread awareness of the benefits of human factors/ergonomics to those not in the HF/E community, especially at the congressional level. She is also the first female editor of Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
Arnold M. Small President's Distinguished Service Award
Hal W. Hendrick was recognized for his conceptualization and initiation of the subdiscipline of macroergonomics, which has influenced many in the profession and the Society.
